Think Kit #9, Water Polo, Work, and The Perfect Day

Think Kit #9, Water Polo, Work, and The Perfect Day
Here we are with Think Kit number 9.  The question that showed up in the inbox was... "What completely surprised you this year?"  As in post number 8, two events come to mind.  First is leaving my corporate gig and second is having the opportunity to coach water polo again... awwww yeah water polo! Let's stick with water polo for number 9.

The Perfect Day

You may be thinking... How does water polo fit into this mix?  Here is a brief explanation.  Two years ago I sat down and wrote an outline titled "The Perfect Day."  It was an hour by hour documentation of how my ideal work day would look.  Call it a visioning exercise.  On the list was "4:00pm-6:00pm, Coach Water Polo." Simple enough.  The idea was to start work very early.  Here is a brief rundown of the timeline that was created:
  • Day Starts, 4:00am - 8:00am (Creative time, writing, blogging, digital production stuff where no distractions is key, (thanks for the idea Steve Vai.)
  • Exercise Workout, 8:00am - 10am, (Swim, Lift Weights)
  • Work Continues, customer facing time/admin work, 10:00-4:00pm
  • Coach Water Polo, 4:00pm-6:00pm (With my kids on the team)
The "Perfect Day" outline has a few more details, but this is the basic rundown.  Two years ago, this was just an idealistic dream.  Today, things are very different.  Today, coaching water polo is a reality at Lawrence North High School.  The facility approached me with the opportunity.  The resources are available.  Now, we have 25-30 eager young faces in the water, ages 15-18.  The practice times they slotted for the program are 4:30-6:00.  There is positive feedback from the kids, so the facility is now asking to expand the program to younger kids.  Expansion, Growth.  The "Perfect Day" is coming true (insert weird theme music, doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo.)

Closing

How can this whole thing be wrapped up?  One thing comes to mind... Dream BIG People!  Life is too short to be living someone else's dream.  You are the CEO of your own life! (quoted from someone on a Mixergy interview.) Also, "The Perfect Day" has many other aspects that were not discussed in this post, but the interesting thing is... they are all coming true, (as in this blog post was written from 4:00am-6:00am, huh.)

If there are any questions, please feel free to leave a comment.  Also, thanks to Smallbox for coordinating the Think Kit project! Until next time...

Peace out doggies!
